When is the best time to visit Australia?
Australia – one of the world’s biggest countries, spanning a massive 7,617,930 square kilometers (or 2,941,300 square miles) with a population of just 28 million. The massive size enables it to have a wide assortment of animals, weather, geographies, animals, plants, and terrain. It’s so large that it has 3 different time zones, which are Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), Australian Central Standard Time (ACST), and Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), and it is a continent in itself.
So when we want to discuss the best time to visit Australia, we have to understand that the answer is not going to be easy. Australia is the most populated and best traveled in the coastlines, while Central Australia is not populated, and there is nothing much to do there. When people travel Australia, they stick to a couple of cities on the South Coast and maybe add a road trip to the Great Ocean road. It’s one of the oldest continents, which is only sparsely populated. Therefore you can enjoy the natural sights in their true beauty as they lie virtually undisturbed over thousands of years.
This is a major tourist attraction for everyone as Australia presents some of the world’s most iconic sights. A lot of the planning, research, and finalization of travel plans will depend on your choices, preferences, interests, budgets, and also the ideal climate where you want to travel. While climate change has made it difficult to predict the weather, tourists can still plan according to different Australian regions’ seasons.
Weather in Australia
It’s important to note that sometimes during rains, a few instances of severe flooding also happened. So do keep an eye out for heavy rains, flooding, hurricane-type storms, record-breaking high temperatures, heatwaves, bushfires, storm clouds, etc. We don’t intend to scare you, but keeping them in the back of your mind while planning will ensure the climate and weather don’t have a chance to play spoilsport in your holiday. In the coastal tropics, the weather essentially switches between dry and wet climates. Unless you are visiting the rainforests, you would be better off avoiding all the rains as they will hamper your plans. Besides, the months just before the wet season can get very hot, humid, muggy, and uncomfortable for travel. So plan carefully.
How to plan?
Due to its huge landmass, the climatic conditions in Australia are complex. While it gets very hot in Australia’s dry and arid central parts, it gets equally cold near the shores in the south and southeast regions. Being in the southern hemisphere, the seasons in Australia are opposite to those in the Northern hemisphere. So the summers here last from December to February, and you would instantly realize that it coincides with the winters in Asia, Europe, and North America. Thus making it an ideal location to travel during those months. So if you are planning, do understand the weather patterns in advance as everything else can be easily managed, but not the weather.
You don’t want to be stuck up in foreign land in the wrong weather. It also means that you will have to prepare months in advance as summer holidays in your country may not coincide with Australia’s ideal weather conditions. The best way to plan for Australia is to plan by region and we will do exactly that since weather patterns between regions can also vary wildly. So you would want to plan and figure out the best destinations for a particular region. We have covered regions in Australia and not cities as we do not want to restrict you to only cities when the entire outskirts are open for exploration.
Best time to tour the East Coast
Australia’s east coast is full of stunning beaches, lush green rainforests, modern cities, beautiful landscapes, and of course, the most famous of it all, The Great Barrier Reef. Though it covers more than 18,000 km in length, you do not have to traverse it all. It extends from Cairns in the north to Melbourne in the south, with Sydney’s city as a major tourist attraction. The weather pattern can be a bit complex here. The northeast part of the country can be covered in the months starting September to February as the weather is hot and you can have a good time on the beaches.
However, the southeast part of the country will be cold in December and January. It can also snow in Melbourne in December and January, so plan accordingly. So unless you like cold weather dips in the sea, the weather is not good. It is the peak tourist season in this area and the shoulder months of March to May should find you budget prices for the tour. There are innumerable sights and activates that can be done over the 18,000kms East Coast stretch, so we will keep it out of this discussion. But we will discuss some of the amazing places tourists never seem to miss here.
Best time to visit Great Barrier Reef
Great Barrier Reef needs no introduction. It is one of the largest reefs globally and the most visited place of the cost of Queensland. Queensland cost tends to be warm all year round, unlike the South coast. So you can visit it any time of the year, but do note that the temperatures in summer can go as high as 90degrees, and so you must be prepared for high levels of heat and humidity. It has a humid subtropical climate and the wet season offers respite and showers rain from October to May while months from June to October have a dry season. The highest summer temperatures can peak at 90 degrees Fahrenheit. So you can visit any of the months and even the sea is comfortably warm all year round.
Best time to visit Gold Coast
If you drive for an hour down south from the city of Brisbane, you will reach the Gold Coast. Similar to the Queensland coast, even Gold Coast has beautiful weather all year round. Which makes it ideal for vacationers, surfers, and beach lovers. The entire 5-600 mile coastline offers stunning views, splendid beaches, and good waves to keep you excited. Bondi, Manly, and Coogee are the famous beaches on this stretch. Temperatures can chill during winters as you get close to Sydney, but the chill is only during the winter months during when it may also rain. If you plan for a beach holiday, stick to the summer months. Otherwise, you can even travel during the Autumn and Spring seasons.
Best time to visit South Australia
South Australia is a state in Australia just like Queensland and is also termed as the Wine country for its numerous vineyards. It is claimed to have one-third of Australia’s vineyards as the weather suits vine production. So do not confuse this part with the term “Southern Australia”. While the East Coast deserves all the attention due to the beauty it offers, this part of Australia also gets its share of visitors. Adelaide is the capital city, and this state offers a lot of activity for vineyard lovers. The months starting March to May and from September to November are considered the best months to travel there.
The weather is great, with a low possibility of rains spoiling any of your plans. You can even plan for the winter months of June to August, when you will find the cheapest accommodation, very few tourist arrivals, and the best whale watching experience. While summer months bring in the clear sunny skies, which are great for any activity, including hitting the beach. Further away from the coast lies the part named Central Australia, and summer temperatures here can get high while the mercury will dip to 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Best time to visit Western Australia
Western Australia offers great weather all through the year for travelers and explorers alike. Though it may not have the same level of beauty as the East coast, there are still a lot of travelers who want to explore this part of Australia. The summer months of December to February are arguably the best. But if summer is not for you, you can travel in Spring (September) or Autumn (March to May) as well. Even during winters, Perth’s maximum temperature is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, so even winters can be pretty interesting here. Therefore it’s always sunny in some Western Australia part in winters, making it an ideal all year round paradise for travelers.
Best time to visit Tasmania
While Tasmania offers the best of natural beauty, its location on the southeast coast of Australia has its set of problems. The months December to February are the best months to travel this island part of Australia, which is the summer season. The place comes to life during summers with numerous festivals, events and celebrations happening. But if you are looking for budget travel, you should plan for the Fall season (March and April) and the Spring season (October and November) months when prices are lower for accommodation and air travel. But if you love the cold and snow, pack in the right gear and head out in the winters where chilly weather and dipping temperatures will keep you happy.
Cheapest time to visit Australia
Very often the best time to visit a place also coincides with the cheapest time to visit that place. We agree that there is no point in paying sky-high prices when you can enjoy the same a few weeks earlier or a few weeks later. During the peak tourist season, the accommodation and air travel rates can double and can be a huge price to pay if you are a family. We advise tourists to make use of the bridge months between peak and off-peak season to make the most of the weather, prices, and the low tourist footfalls.
During peak season, everything will seem touristy and crowded, which not many will enjoy. Also, the queues at various entertainment venues and beaches will spoil the fun and lack the required privacy you need to make the most of it. The bridge months will depend on the part of the country you are visiting for the exact weather conditions. But overall, as a thumb rule seasons will usually be the opposite of those happening in the other parts of the world.
Australia is a huge continent with diverse climatic conditions all through the year. No two parts of Australia will display the same climate unless they are geographically closer. It is possible to enjoy the winters down south for a few days and then take a flight to Queensland or Western Australia to enjoy the sun in a matter of few hours. Tourists can even plan for this type of travel. If you plan well in advance, you can take benefit of the bridge months for travel and cut down on your travel costs or add more days to it. Australia is well connected by flights and is the easiest and cheapest way to travel unless you are planning a drive like the one on the Gold Coast, Great Ocean Road, or the Great Barrier Reef.
Months of December and January are high season as they coincide with school and work holidays and also New Year celebrations. While you try to holiday, so will millions of other Aussies, and you can very well predict what will happen? Don’t tell us that we did not warn you. The holidays starting from Christmas or Boxing Day up to the end of January are when Australians travel across the country. A lot of tourists try to avoid summers in Australia as it can get too hot for comfort. I hope information acts as a guide and helps you to plan out your vacation.
