New York City, often called just NYC, New York, or Big Apple is located in New York State’s southern tip. It is also the largest metropolitan area in the globe today and 20 million people in its statistical area. New York City is not just the heart of New York State but also the United States. It is also the global financial capital housing the New York stock exchange and headquarters of the top global companies, apart from being the cultural and media capital.

Let’s start with the seasons first. No, not the weather seasons. We are talking about the tourist seasons here. This is because once we know the tourist months, it will help us understand when the tourists flock and why.

Peak tourist season:

The peak tourism occurs between the months from June to August and November to December.

June to August:

The months from June to August correspond with some of the city’s highest temperatures and a time when the weather is pleasant, conditions are favorable to undertake tourist activities. The maximum temperatures will range between 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is pretty much common to the city all year round, meaning you will not be spared by the showers any time of the year. So just carry an umbrella and be prepared to brave the showers if they catch you unexpectedly. This is a favorable time for vacationing travelers from across the globe.

November to December:

The winter months of November and December include Thanksgiving, Christmas, the New Year festivities, and all the festivities associated with that time. Being a world-famous spot to ring in the New Year, it’s a must-do on the bucket list of so many travelers. The winter weather makes it even more exciting, with all the beautiful illumination making the city come to life. But winters can be chilly and damp due to the rains, and low temperatures hover around the freezing and sub-zero mark. Night-time temperatures do not hit any lower than these because it’s an urban city that generated the urban heat island effect.

Shoulder Season:

The month’s March to May and September to October are the shoulder months for obvious reasons. In both seasons, there is a distinct relaxed air around it and a sense of tranquillity.

Spring season:

In the Spring, the warm temperatures are picking, and so is the tourist season. And the weather is great, but the tourist numbers are still not picking up, which makes it’s a buyers’ market for tourists. You will find the best deal, good discounts, and great offers from hotels, airlines, and tour operators who want to tap into the small number of tourists for business. These spring and fall seasons are best to explore the city attractions like Central Park, the open-air markets, and live events.

The city feels as if it is slowly coming out of its long slumber. Everywhere you see, you will observe that the flowers have started to bloom and new leaves shoot from tree branches. Tourists must make the most of rising temperatures by visiting the Botanical Garden, Central Park, and The Highline, and Bryant Park. At some time during the end of Fall, the leaves start changing color slowly and fall over a period of a week, and the entire city is a pretty sight of fallen colorful leaves in the urban world.

The changing colors on the trees in Central Park will leave you especially mesmerized during the fall season. You will observe the peace and solitude that you will enjoy at the tourist spots with disappearing tourist crowds and a calm growing over the city. But this is not it, as the city will still conserve its final bit of energy for Halloween when the city erupts to life. There are colorful lights everywhere, parties happening, and people are out to have fun.

Low season:

This season extends from January to mid-March. This is the peak winter season with no particular tourist activity due to the freezing temperatures and no important activity that will attract the crowds. Snow is common during this period, and temperatures will be around freezing temperatures. Despite this, you will see a slight decrease in the airfares and hotel rates. If you want to enjoy NYC at this time of the year, you will be welcomed with the best offers of the year and the lowest rates for any season. There will be only a marginal crowd at all the touristic locations, and tickets will be easy to come by.

It’s important to note that New York City is the financial capital, so hotel occupancy will never dip below a point. Best time to avoid crowds

To avoid crowds heading out in the chilly winter months from January to March, there is almost zero tourist activity. Most tourists exit NYC in the 1st week of January following New Year’s Eve, and are the best time to see the city without being subjected to hordes of tourists trying to make it to every tourist spot. You will be able to view and cover all spots at a comfortable pace and click as many pictures without giving in to someone else.

Special Tips

  • During peak season, the airfares will skyrocket, and you may find it difficult to find the right accommodation. So plan and book in advance.
  • Winters can get chilly, pack in enough winter clothing, and some rain protections to escape the occasional shower.
  • Get the New York City Explorer Pass, which will save you a lot of money on the top attractions. You can choose the great 10-attraction pass and save you a lot of money. However, the 3, 5, and 7 attraction passes are also good.
  • Shopping and travel go hand in hand. You will find bargains in NYC all year round, but there are special sales twice a year that you should not miss. These are the months November to December and also April to May.
