Placed in the heart of Switzerland, Geneva is a historic city that has a lot to offer to tourists and if you decide to visit it, we can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. 

Many people, when coming to Switzerland, visit Zurich or Bazel and therefore, Geneva doesn’t get the attention it needs. But, of course, old-school travellers will know that Geneva has a lot to offer and they have this city in their “to visit” books. In this article, we’ll talk about some of the iconic places which you should visit in Geneva. Of course, there are a lot of interesting sights, buildings, architecture and so on, but, for the purpose of this article and in order to help possible tourists focus on just the most important stuff, we picked a few things that most people visit when they come to Geneva. We’ll also cover some of the awesome services you can get in Geneva, just to make your stay even better.

What To Visit?

  • Lake Geneva – This is probably one thing that makes Geneva famous. The sight of the lake is so picturesque that it comes as no surprise that many movies have this place under the spotlight of a love scene. The Alps in the background snug the lake so well that you’ll feel breathless and wish to stay there forever. There are boat trips that go regularly towards other towns on the lakeshore such as Montreux or Lausanne. The price is not that expensive and it’s something you should definitely do. Keep in mind that the lake is quite big and you’ll need at least a day for the whole tour. But, yet again, this is something you shouldn’t miss.
  • Temple de Saint-Pierre – This church dates from 1150 which makes it almost 900 years old! It’s one of the symbols of Geneva and you should definitely visit it as in presence of it, you’ll feel so small and amazed. It’s located on the highest point of the old town which also makes a perfect view of the rest of the city. Now, we won’t get too much into details as it’s always better to learn about the church when you get there, but, in a nutshell, this was a Romanesque church that has some gothic elements. Later on, during Protestant Reformation in which Geneva played a big role, the name of the church was changed to the temple and thus, it became a protestant church. It has two principal towers which you can climb upon and at the top what you’ll see is one of the most beautiful sights over the lake Geneva and the Alps. Definitely something you shouldn’t miss.
  • Place du Bourg-de-Four – This sight is probably the most popular square in the whole of Geneva. It’s located near the Temple of Saint-Pierre and it sits on the site of Roman forum. It has a lot of history to it and years ago, here you could find a market which offered the residents of Geneva everything they needed. Later on, in the 16th century, Protestants found shelter here and used this location as the main point of their gathering. Nowadays, this is an old square that has a lot to offer. Form cafes, restaurants, bakeries and sweet shops, Place Du Bourg is the most popular square amongst Geneva residents but amongst tourists as well. 

There are probably places which are commonly visited when it comes to Geneva. But, truth to be told, there are a lot more sights you can visit. Palace of Nations which is the European headquarters of the United Nations, and is the biggest centre of world diplomacy after the headquarters in New York. Art and history museum, Patek Philippe museum and so on. If you come to Geneva, you definitely won’t get bored.
